Chronic Pain

Chronic pain is a persistent pain that lasts for more than 12 weeks, even after an injury or illness has healed. It can be caused by a variety of factors, including physical injuries, nerve damage, and conditions such as arthritis or fibromyalgia.

Symptoms

The main symptom of chronic pain is ongoing pain that can be dull or sharp, localized or widespread. It can also be accompanied by other symptoms such as:

• Fatigue
• Sleep disturbances
• Mood changes, such as depression or anxiety
• Difficulty concentrating
• Decreased appetite

Causes

Chronic pain can be caused by a variety of factors, including:

• Physical injuries, such as those from accidents or surgeries
• Nerve damage or dysfunction
• Conditions such as arthritis, fibromyalgia, or cancer
• Chronic infections or inflammation
• Psychological factors such as stress or trauma

Treatment

The treatment of chronic pain depends on the underlying cause and may include a combination of medication, physical therapy, and psychological interventions such as cognitive-behavioral therapy.

Medications used to treat chronic pain include over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), as well as prescription medications such as opioids, antidepressants, and anticonvulsants.

Physical therapy can help improve strength, flexibility, and range of motion, while psychological interventions such as cognitive-behavioral therapy can help improve coping skills and manage stress and anxiety.
